MANILA – Sen. Nancy Binay wants the paid maternity leave to be extended to 120 days from the current 60 days.

According to Binay, the current allowable maternity leave is not enough for mothers with delicate pregnancy.

“That is why it is imperative that we, my colleagues in Congress, must work together and pass the proposed increase in maternity leave benefits,” the coauthor of Senate Bill 1305 said.

The measure allows 120 days of paid maternity leave to all female workers — regardless of marital status — in both public and private sectors, and gives an option to extend the leave for 30 more days without pay.

“It pains me to see a mother cutting short the time to bond with her child and go back to work, especially during the crucial period of the infant’s development,” Binay said.

She said the current maternity leave period in the Philippines is shorter than the 98 days set by the International Labor Organization.

“Some countries in Europe have recognized that mother and child bonding deserves a longer time and allowed a year with pay for them,” the senator from Makati City added.

Binay, eldest daughter of former vice president Jejomar Binay, is a mother of four./PN
