Facebook gossip drives man to kill neighbor

ALIMODIAN, Iloilo – A 43-year-old husband who had nothing to do but browse Facebook eventually read a gossip that drove him to kill a 63-year-old woman.

The 43-year-old Richard Alinsangao of Rufina  St., Poblacion hacked his neighbor Rosalinda Bering to death.

He also hacked another neighbor, Mia Alegre, who survived the bolo attack and is now confined in a hospital.

Alinsangao, whose wife works abroad, surrendered and turned over his bolo to the police after Monday night’s hacking.

He confessed having done the crime due to anger caused by “negative comments” – like his being jobless and dependent on his wife – that the two women were spreading on Facebook.

Alimodian police’s Chief Insp. Bonifacio Ancajas said that while Bering was walking to Alegre’s house around 7 p.m., Alinsangao waylaid her and hacked her neck several times.

Upon seeing Alegre, he also hacked her.

Alinsangao will be charged with the crimes of murder and frustrated murder.

Facebook has been involved in many controversies over privacy. Some of these controversies have been about people being able to see personal information that other people post.

Research published in the journal PLOS ONE has shown that Facebook may be responsible for spreading unhappiness through society as well as keeping people connected.

Scientists found that the more time people spent on Facebook over a two-week period, the worse they subsequently felt.

According to the research, on the surface Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection.

Rather than enhancing well-being, however, these findings suggest that Facebook may undermine it./PN
