‘Fake news’ about AI seen hampering adoption in PH

PHILIPPINE chief executive officers (CEOs) have high expectations about artificial intelligence (AI) boosting business, but barriers to adoption remain, a leading technology company said on Tuesday, July 2.

An IBM survey of 2,500 CEOs across 30 countries showed that 82 percent of CEOs in the Philippines are “bullish” about AI, said Aileen Jiao, president and country general manager of IBM Philippines.

She noted that this was the highest number globally.

“They think that the benefits of AI outweigh the risks,” Jiao said in an interview with ANC.

However, translating excitement into deployment is another matter, she added.

“The ultimate challenge is getting it deployed, putting it in production and at scale. I think that is where we lag,” she said.

Some of the biggest challenges to adopting AI involve workers’ skills, as well as the need for a cultural shift in the organization.

But one surprising barrier to AI, Jaio said, was “fake news” about the technology.

She said this was “the fear of AI overriding the intent and the benefits.”

Jiao said that while AI can mimic the human brain, it is there to augment human intelligence. (ABS-CBN News)
