ILOILO City – More than 100 motor boats plying the routes of Iloilo City to Guimaras and vice-versa continue to use the old wharves despite the opening of the new Parola ferry terminal more than two months ago.
Some ferry boats plying from the Parola and Buenavista Port in Guimaras found the new docking area to be shallow and needs immediate dredging and reinforcement piles.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed that Guimaras boat passengers still prefer to use the old Parola landing site near the new terminal.
PCG commander Lieutenant Ramil Palabrica reiterated that the specific area needs reinforcement of piles and it is not safe for vessels and passengers to use the docking site under its present condition.
The PCG has already recommended to the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) the immediate dredging of the area and driving of reinforcement piles along the river banks serving as a docking area.
PPA Port Manager Rosenda Sumagaysay said the reinforcement of piles may entail a budget of several millions of pesos and PPA or the Department of Transportation may include the reinforcement budget in 2017. (PNA)
