ILOILO City – The Hirinugyaw Suguidanonay Festival of the Calinog, Iloilo municipal government returned this year with a fresh and innovative format, enchanting audiences with its tribute to history, faith, and cultural heritage.

Held on February 1 and 2, the festival highlighted two separate but equally mesmerizing performances: the legendary Suguidanon and the vibrant Hirinugyaw.

This marked the first time in the festival’s history that the two iconic elements were given distinct showcases, allowing each to shine in its own right.

The events were separated to allow the public to fully appreciate the Suguidanon and Hirinugyaw, explained Calinog’s Mayor Francisco Calvo.

The municipal government allocated approximately P360,000 in financial assistance to each of the nine competing school-based tribes.

The grand champion will receive a cash prize along with P3 million worth of projects for their school.

To ensure the safety of guests and spectators, military and police personnel were deployed during the festival.

Calvo also expressed the municipal government’s ambition to elevate the Hirinugyaw Suguidanonay Festival to the level of Iloilo City’s renowned Dinagyang Festival. He promised an even grander celebration in the coming years.

On the evening of February 1, the Suguidanon, an ancient epic chronicling the tales of the Hinilawod gods and heroic figures, took center stage.

Reimagined as a visually stunning dance epic, the performance brought the island’s myths to life through intricate choreography and dramatic storytelling.

“This performance allowed the audience to experience the Suguidanon in a new and immersive way, reconnecting them with the roots of our cultural heritage,” said Wilfredo Aviador, Jr., festival director.

The following day, the Hirinugyaw, traditionally a ritualistic dance honoring the Santo Niño, transformed into an exhilarating tribal competition.

Local tribes showcased their creativity and devotion through dynamic dance performances, vibrant costumes, and lively music, each presenting unique interpretations of the faith-centered celebration.

“This year’s festival is a significant step in the evolution of the Hirinugyaw Suguidanonay Festival,” Aviador remarked. “By separating these two iconic performances, we give each their due prominence—celebrating both our epic heritage and our deep devotion to the Santo Niño in their full glory. This is a festival not only of fun and festivity but also of honoring the rich tapestry of traditions that define us as a people.”

Now a cornerstone of cultural pride, the Hirinugyaw Suguidanonay Festival continues to bring the community together to honor shared history and faith.

This year’s format has elevated the event as a cultural landmark, offering an unforgettable experience to both locals and visitors.

“We invite everyone to come and witness the beauty and depth of Calinog’s heritage and partake in this one-of-a-kind celebration,” Aviador said./PN
