MANILA – Filipino-American James Deiparine halted the Philippines’ decades-old gold medal drought in Southeast Asian Games swimming by ruling the men’s 100-meter breaststroke at the NCC Aquatics Center in New Clark City, Tarlac.
Deiparine’s gold medal feat yesterday did not only clinch the country its first SEA Games swimming gold since 2009. He also broke the biennial meet’s record in 100-meter breaststroke with his 1.01.46.
Meanwhile, gymnast Carlos Yulo added three more silver medals to his collection after finishing runner up to vault and parallel bars last night and also settling for second place in steel ring late Tuesday evening.
The Philippine National Obstacle Race Team delivered four golds, one silver and one bronze medals at the start of the obstacle course event at the Filinvest City in Alabang.
Kevin Pascua notched the gold medal in 100-meter x 10 obstacle with Mark Rodelas winning the bronze, while Rochelle Suarez and Milky Tejares notched the gold and silver medal in the distaff side.
Kyle Antolin, Kaizen Dela Serna, Monolito Divina, and Deanne Moncada bagged the mixed team assist 400-meter x 12 obstacle gold, while Diana Buhler, Jeffrey Reginio, Klymille Rodriguez, and Nathaniel Sanchez topped the mixed team relay 400-meter x 12 obstacle event.
Kristel Macrohon delivered the second weightlifting gold for the Philippines. She ruled the women’s 71 kg category while Elreen Ann Ando settled for silver in women’s 64 kg category.
Marly Martir delivered two gold medals in shooting. She topped the WA 1500 CC event before teaming up with Shayne Quiroz and Elvie Baldivino for the team event.
Nancy Toyco, Ainie Knight and Bruce Asuncion delivered silver medal in lawn bowls while the group of Ronald Lising, Leoncio Carreon, Emmanuel Portacio and Robert Guarin ended with bronze.
Alfau Jan Abad and Almohaidib Abad settled for silver in pencak silat, Robert Andrew Garcia and Jemyca Aribado each had a silver in squash, the Philippines men’s and women’s underwater hockey team also finished with silver each in 4×4 event.
Fencer Hanniel Abella netted a silver in women’s individual epee, while Nathaniel Perez had bronze in men’s individual foil, Remely Alexis Rule had silver in women’s 200 meter butterfly while Mark Joseph Gonzales bagged a bronze in short track speed ice skating./PN
