MANILA – Filipino women are urged to unite against any attack on women’s rights and dignity.
Women have always been the target of misogynistic and sexist attacks, said Sen. Leila de Lima, who is now detained at the Custodial Center of the Philippine National Police in Camp Crame over drug-related charges.
“Not just Filipino women, but women all over the world are always among the first to speak out against oppression and they are the loudest and bravest in their opposition whenever human rights and democracy are under siege,” de Lima said on Wednesday.
“But what is really disturbing is that there are people in power who are brazenly unapologetic in their mistreatment and insensitivity towards women,” she added.
The former Justice secretary and Commission on Human Rights chief has been the subject of President Rodrigo Duterte’s criticism after her Senate justice committee led the investigation into the summary killings in Davao City, where the leader served as mayor for 22 years, congressman for three years, and vice mayor for another three years.
From that time, Duterte has linked her in the illegal drugs trade in the national penitentiary. She was also accused of having an illicit affair and sex video scandal with her former driver, a married man.
“At a time when we are faced with a crisis of democracy, where citizens are silenced amid the prevalence of violence in our society, we are called upon to speak up for what is right – even if it is unpopular – and stand up for our ideals and values,” de Lima said.
The lady senator from Bicol said the true test of nationhood comes during times of conflict, and not peace.
“Sama-sama, ipaglaban natin ang ating karapatan, ang ating dignidad, ang ating pagkababae. Ipakita natin ang lakas ng Pilipina na itaguyod ang tama at makatwiran, at makiambag sa pagpapaganda ng ating kinabukasan,” she said.
While in detention, de Lima has continued to perform her mandate. Since her detention, she has filed 10 bills and 14 resolutions./PN
