ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is sticking to the agreed deadline for the removal of unsightly spaghetti wires along Diversion Road (Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue) in Mandurriao district, extending up to Christ the King Memorial Park in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district.
The initiative, part of the city’s ongoing urban renewal efforts, should be completed by the end of this month.
The mayor had several discussions with telecommunication and utility companies, addressing the visual clutter caused by tangled overhead cables. These wires, long considered an eyesore, have hindered the city’s modernization and detracted from the visual appeal of major streets.
The removal of these “spaghetti” wires is in line with Iloilo City’s Underground Cabling Ordinance, which mandates relocating all overhead utility lines underground. The ordinance aims to eliminate visual clutter and promote a more organized, visually appealing city.
“The presence of these cables creates a disorganized image that no longer aligns with the city’s growth and modernization,” said Mayor Treñas. “We want to create a visually attractive environment that reflects our city’s progress.”
The mayor stressed the importance of collaboration between the city government and utility providers. He emphasized that the goal is not only to improve aesthetics but also to enhance public safety and the functionality of public spaces.
The removal of the spaghetti wires is expected to improve the city’s appearance while also paving the way for better organized, safer utilities. This project is part of Iloilo City’s broader efforts to balance urban development with the preservation of its cultural heritage./PN
