FINANCIAL problems forced Global Cebu not to suit up for its scheduled 2018 Philippines Football League match against Kaya Iloilo Wednesday night at the Iloilo Sports Complex in Iloilo City.
It did not mean to disrespect Kaya Iloilo and Ilonggo football fans with its decision to default on its match, Global Cebu said in a statement sent to Panay News Wednesday.
“Global Cebu FC would like to ask for your understanding and compassion during these difficult times,” Global said. “Despite all efforts to raise the means we need to honor our commitment, the club’s current financial status will not allow us to travel [to] Iloilo.”
“We have no intention of disrespecting Kaya FC Iloilo, its supporters, the whole province of Iloilo, and – most especially – all football fans by not showing up in (the Wednesday) game. We just don’t have the means right now to travel,” it added.
Global Cebu requested the PFL a few days ago to postpone the match against Kaya Iloilo but the league did not approve this and decided to award the match to the Ilonggo squad.
“We wrote the Philippines Football League a few days ago asking for a postponement of our game against Kaya FC Iloilo, explaining the predicament the club is currently facing. But then again, there were so many things that are beyond our control,” it said.
Global Cebu added: “Rest assured the club is doing its best in looking for an immediate solution to our financial concerns. We also remain optimistic that something positive will materialize in the next few weeks.”
Prior to the start of the season, Global Cebu was dealt with a huge blow by the departure of stars Misagh Bahadoran and Armani Aguinaldo. It also failed to renew the contract of head coach Akbar Nawas.
The club also parted ways with former owner Dan Palami, with Alvin Carranza of MacGraphics Carranz taking over. Global Cebu is currently at the tail-end of the standings (1 point on a draw and five losses)./PN
