ILOILO City – The barangay council of Benedicto in Jaro district will hold a special session to declare a state of calamity. A residential area in the village’s Sitio Langka was razed by fire on Saturday afternoon.
A total of 72 houses were damaged, 68 of which were totally gutted.
As of this writing, the barangay council was preparing a Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis to establish the extent of damage and losses.
The assessment is one of the requirements to declare a state of calamity, said City Administrator Hernando Galvez.
The initial estimate of damage by the Bureau of Fire Protection was some P4 million.
The barangay council could use its Quick Response Fund (QRF) only after a declaration of a state of calamity.
The declaration would also allow the city government to use its own QRF to help the barangay, said Galvez.
The Jaro Plaza gym was temporarily transformed into an evacuation center for 105 displaced families.
Mayor Jose Espinosa III ordered the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) to assist the families.
The City Health Office (CHO) distributed 80 jerry cans to be filled with drinking water while the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) released 73 sacks of rice, 1,095 cans of sardines, beef loaf, pork and beans, and sausage.
One of the organizations that responded to the city government’s appeal for help was the Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce. It donated 350 pieces of blankets, pillows, mats and 200 boxes of 500ml mineral water (36 bottles per box).
The Philippine Red Cross Iloilo City Chapter, on the other hand, donated a total of 400 cups of arroz caldo.
The Rotary Club of Metro Iloilo gave out 75 pieces of mats.
A meeting of officials from CDRRMO, CSWDO and Barangay Benedicto was able to identify the immediate needs of the evacuees. These included diapers for infants and senior citizens, sanitary napkins, toiletries, underwear for men and women, school supplies for children, eating utensils, bathing stations and electric fans./PN
