BACOLOD City – An early morning fire struck 11 houses in Purok Sto. Niño, Barangay Zone 4, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.
Nine houses were destroyed and two were damaged, while one resident was injured.
The gutted houses were made of a mix of materials — concrete, galvanized iron sheets, wood, and nipa — said Senior Inspector Gregorio Otico, Cadiz City fire marshal.
Residents were awakened by the blaze around 1 a.m. on Sunday.
Responding firefighters put the fire under control after about an hour and a half, said Otico.
He said the blaze started from the house of Irene Jaranilla, where a candle fell and made combustible materials catch fire.
Jaranilla sustained second-degree burns. She was taken to the Cadiz City Emergency Clinic and transferred to the Cadiz District Hospital.
Her house was destroyed. Roger Desuyo, Analyn Segovia, Arnold Pandacan, Rogelio Desuyo Jr., Jerie Mae Gregorio, Juliet Bona, Ronald Desuyo, and Armando Jaranilla owned the other razed houses.
The houses of Bartolome Batain and Evelyn Flores were damaged.
Otico said they have yet to determine the cost of damage as of this writing. Investigation continues./PN
