CAPIZ – The province of Capiz witnessed a staggering total of 214 fire incidents throughout the year 2023, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
Fire Superintendent Jenny Mae Masip, Provincial Fire Marshall, disclosed this during a Bombo Radyo Roxas interview on Sunday, Jan. 7.
The data revealed a significant increase of 19.55 percent compared to the 179 fire incidents reported in the preceding year of 2022.
Masip said this highlighted the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures.
Of the total cases last year, 138 incidents were categorized as structural fires, primarily involving houses and buildings, while 49 were non-structural in nature.
Additionally, 27 incidents were attributed to transportation-related fires.
Three fire casualties and one injury were also reported.
Data revealed that the most common causes of fires were faulty electrical wiring and unattended candles and embers.
With these, Masip urged the public to regularly check and unplug appliances before sleeping or leaving their homes, to never leave lighted candles unattended, and to remain cautious of any signs of electrical supply disruptions.
