MARCH is not only Women’s Month. It is also the Fire Prevention Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 115-A issued on Nov. 17, 1966.

Why March? It is because March is one of the hottest months in the country. It is the onset of the dry season that lasts up to May.

The observance of Fire Prevention Month is being promoted to heighten public awareness and lessen the incidence of fire because all types of households and structures can fall victim. It is a good time to give some practical fire prevention tips.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection 6, “octopus” electrical connection is the leading cause of fire in Iloilo City. This refers to several extensions plugged in an electrical outlet, causing electricity overloading.

Yes, do not overload your electrical circuits. Turn off electrical appliances that aren’t necessary to be used. Overheating of electrical circuits causes the insulation to melt leading to seasonal house fires. Avoid this by using proper insulation.

See to it that electrical wirings at home are checked by licensed electricians regularly. Neglected or overlooked wires also pose danger.

Other common causes of fire in Iloilo City are open flames due to unattended cooking, lighted matches or lighter, unattended lighted candle and lighted cigarette butts, according to BFP.

Another sensible thing to do is this: encouraged everyone to teach kids about fire safety and make fire prevention a way of life. We could not afford to see our children getting hurt, or worse, perish in fire. They should know how to use the fire exit or when to go in times of fire disasters or calamities.

Households and establishments should conform to the provisions of the fire code. All should have fire extinguishers in case of fire emergencies and all family members, workers and other occupants should know how to use them when needed.

When leaving the house see to it that electrical appliances are unplugged. LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) tanks must be switched off in the main valve when not in use.

Drums of water and stored sand could also help in case of fire. Just make sure that the water containers are properly covered to avoid mosquito proliferation.

Fire prevention should be a way of life.
