MANILA – Ilonggo volleyball fans might not see the De La Salle University Lady Spikers and the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles up close anytime soon.
DLSU backed out from the scheduled exhibition match with the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons set this August in Iloilo and Negros Occidental.
Lady Eagles also turned down a separate exhibition match also set to be held in Iloilo City. They will be busy preparing for the upcoming UAAP season.
But Lady Spikers gave no reason, Ilonggo sportsman Ruding Villaruz told Panay News.
“The exhibition match between DLSU and UP will not push through,” Villaruz said. “Actually earlier this month, they already said yes, then days after that, pinapa-hold nila, and then after that umayaw na.”
Villaruz acknowledged that volleyball fans who have been waiting for DLSU Lady Spikers to play in Iloilo may be disappointed. “Sadly it will not push through,” he said. “Humihingi ako ng paumanhin.”
But Villaruz said he was still working on a possible exhibition match between Lady Maroons and a local selection team. “Sa DLSU lang naman nagkaproblema.”
As for Ateneo, “may mga tournaments na silang naka-schedule” aside from the upcoming UAAP season, he said. So “hindi rin matutuloy iyong Lady Eagles dito sa Iloilo.”
Ateneo, which finished as runner-up to DLSU in the UAAP Season 79, was on a rebuilding stage with the departure of Julia Morado and Michelle Morente./PN
