Fish vendor nabbed for counterfeiting driver’s license

ILOILO City – A fish vendor was arrested for making counterfeit drivers’ licenses in an entrapment operation at Feeder Port, Barangay Poblacion, Iloilo yesterday, May 13.

Polen Villaruz, 37, was apprehended by police and taken to the Estancia Police Station around 2:30 a.m.

According to Estancia Police Chief, Major Aldren Lamera, the suspect was caught with help from one of his victims who led the transaction for the police. “We recovered several evidences showing that he was engaged in counterfeiting the driver’s licenses and he was also engaged in illegal drugs because we recovered four sachets of shabu from him. I believed that there were many drivers who have been victimized,” Lamera said.

The suspect will face charges for “estafa”, usurpation of authority and falsification of public documents.

Villaruz is the fourth person caught by the Land Transportation Office (LTO-6) in Iloilo this year for counterfeiting licenses. Another suspect, Eldine Jane Berman, 25, was arrested in a mall in Jaro district. The suspect was caught handing out a fake driver’s license for P6, 000, police said. LTO-6 Assistant Regional Director Gaudioso Geduspan is warning the public that only the LTO can process licenses and that registrants must visit their office. | via Ruby Silubrico/PN
