ILOILO City – A multipurpose building that would serve as a health and evacuation center has been inaugurated in Barangay Dungon A, Jaro district.

The ground and second floors of the P3-million two-storey building would be utilized as a health center while the rooftop would serve as an evacuation center, said Barangay Captain Genoviva Capulong.

The evacuation center is necessary because the barangay is prone to flooding, she stressed.

When typhoon “Frank” hit Iloilo City in Jun e 2008, the water rose to about 7.2 feet at the gymnasium area of the barangay. A total of 317 houses went underwater and the rescue operation lasted for three days.

Dungon A was among the barangays whose barangay captains were chosen to attend a training on disaster management in Japan in 2012. Capulong said what she learned she cascaded to her constituents.

Once the building becomes complete with facilities, it would also welcome people from neighboring villages, said Capulong.

The Department of Public Works and Highways constructed the building. The office of Sen. Risa Hontiveros facilitated the funding.

The inauguration was held on April 19. (PNA)
