MANILA – Larry Fonacier came up with two crucial 3-pointers in the endgame for NLEX Road Warriors to escape San Miguel Beermen 103-100 in the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
With the score tied at 96-all, Fonacier swung a 99-96 lead for NLEX with a triple from the left wing. After Beermen cut the deficit 98-99, Fonacier drained another triple from top of the key to seal the win for Road Warriors.
Fonacier finished with 16 points – including four 3-point conversions – for NLEX, which clinched a quarterfinals seat in the conference with a 6-2 win-loss record after the Sunday night game.
Import Aaron Fuller led the way with 26 points while JR Quinahan and Alex Mallari had 17 and 10 points, respectively, for Road Warriors.
“Parang mahirap pa makapaniwala na tinalo namin ang San Miguel in a tight game,” said NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao. “We’re developing some maturity, composure in the endgame, and it’s a good sign for us.”
From a slim 25-24 lead at the end of the first quarter, NLEX waxed hot from the 3-point line in the second half behind Quinahan, Fonacier and Cyrus Baguio to push the lead 52-39 on a Kevin Alas hit.
San Miguel countered with a rally behind Wendell McKines, Alex Cabagnot and Marcio Lassiter to snatch the lead 70-68 before making the entire fourth quarter a seesaw affair – until Fonacier’s treys.
McKines finished with 28 points while Lassiter, Cabagnot and Arwind Santos came up with 19 points each for Beermen, which dropped to 3-2./PN
