GUIMARAS – Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages contributed most in the consistent elevation of the annual rate of price change in this island province, data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed.

With 9.6 percent inflation, food and non-alcoholic drinks contributed 79.9 percent to Guimaras’ 5.2 percent September headline inflation, it added.

Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals; cereals and cereal products; and vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses were the top contributors of food items. While soft drinks and cocoa drinks were the main drivers of non-alcoholic beverages.

“Other commodities that showed a significant contribution to September inflation uptrend were transport with -10.2 percent inflation and education services with -7.3 percent inflation, sharing 8.2 and 5.6 percent, respectively,” Losare added.

Other commodity groups with faster inflation in September were: clothing and footwear (0.96 percent); furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance (6.5 percent); personal care and miscellaneous goods and services (6.1 percent); and recreation, sport and culture (4.6 percent).

However, four commodity groups recorded slower price indices, namely: alcoholic beverages and tobacco (9.9 percent from 10.1 percent); housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels (0.8 percent from 2.3 percent); information and communication (-0.5 percent from 0.4 percent); and restaurants and accommodation services (8.1 percent from 11.3 percent)./PN
