Food processing firm stops production of canned Tawilis, to pullout stocks in market

MANILA – Food processing firm San Marino of CDO Foodsphere Inc. announced it has stopped the use of endangered species Tawilis in its production in its commitment to preserve marine life.

“San Marino is committed to doing its share in protecting and preserving our marine wildlife and natural resources,” the company said in a statement posted on its Twitter account on Jan. 25.

“As a testament to our commitment, we have already stopped the production of San Marino Premium Tawilis and will begin withdrawing our stocks from all stores as soon as possible,” it said.

San Marino made the announcement on the heels of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) declaration that the Taal Lake’s Tawilis or Sardinella Tawilis is now an endangered species.

“We will work closely with government regulatory bodies and Taal Lake authorities to help preserve our precious Sardinella Tawilis,” the company said. (GMA News)
