ILOILO City – Regional Trial Court Judge Ma. Rita Bascos Sarabia, a former member of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, has died.
She succumbed to complications from second degree burns sustained from an explosion caused by a gas leak from a liquefied petroleum gas tank.
Sarabia died in a hospital in Metro Manila past 9 p.m. on Dec. 26.
“Ginakasubo ta gid,” said Mayor Jose Espinosa III who announced Sarabia’s passing after the flag-raising ceremony at city hall yesterday.
Espinosa and Sarabia used to be colleagues in the city council.
Sarabia joined the judiciary after serving as city councilor for two terms (1998 to 2001 and 2001 to 2004).
Rex Marcus Bascos Sarabia, son of the lady judge, thanked everyone for their prayers and expressions of sympathy.
“We regret to inform those concerned that our beloved mother…has now peacefully passed away. You may visit her wake at Gegato-Abecia Funeral Homes (Coastal Road), Iloilo City. Viewing will start on Dec. 29, 2018. Her burial ceremony would be on Jan. 5, 2019,” Rex Marcus posted on Facebook.
He described his mother as a “fiery champion of the poor who fought for their rights and welfare.”
“She also fought against tyranny and oppression during the Marcos regime. She fought to deliver justice in our society as a lawyer and a judge. This brave girl from Jaro, however, fought her last fight. For six agonizing days, she was a warrior to the last second,” according to Rex Marcus./PN
