BACOLOD City – The Provincial Library of Negros Occidental created the Friends of the Library – Negros Occidental (Folno).
Provincial Librarian Dr. Joyce Deloso led the creation of Folno, which comprises representatives from national government agencies, nongovernment organizations, the academe, and foundations.
Under Republic Act 7743, which provides for the establishment of congressional, city and municipal libraries and barangay reading centers, libraries must do linkages, networking and collaboration with other agencies and organizations to support its activities.
“Libraries should engage in networking, resource-sharing and other forms of partnerships. This is where Folno comes in,” Deloso said. “Members are encouraged to invite other individuals and groups to also become ‘Friends of the Library.’”
Lawyer Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, executive director of the Bacolod-Negros Federation for Information and Communications Technology, was elected the first Folno president.
Other pioneering officers included Jolly Mider of Dr. Pablo O. Torre Foundation, Inc., vice president; Susan Cuaycong of University of St. La Salle, secretary; Mary Joy Cañonero of Bacolod City Water District, treasurer; and representatives from the Philippine Information Agency and Negros Press Club’s Boy Duran, public information officers.
Folno’s Board of Directors comprises Levi Trio, Caryl Anne Diamante-Depositario, Francis de los Reyes, Dr. Leonard Eusebio, and Randy Bolves.
Meanwhile Deloso, a member of Task Force of the National Library for the Visayas, revealed they were working on the standardization of public libraries, including subjecting them to accreditation. (PIA/PN)
