MANILA – Filipino boxer Reymart Gaballo will aim for the World Boxing Council (WBC) interim world bantamweight championship when he faces Puerto Rican Emmanuel Rodriguez on Sunday at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, United States.

The upcoming match will be huge for the General Santos City-native as he moves closer to his dream of fighting for a world boxing championship.

“I am very excited for this fight. It’s been almost a year since my last fight and my opponent Rodriquez is a great boxer but I will do everything to win,” said Gaballo, who has been training in Miami since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Gaballo was originally scheduled to fight Jose Velasquez in the undercard of the Nonito Donaire Jr.-Rodriguez world title clash, but Donaire was pulled out after testing positive for COVID-19.

Gaballo has a record of 23-0-0 win-loss-draw, 20 of those coming by knockout. He has stopped 15 of his last 16 opponents and won the interim WBA bantamweight title against Stephon Young.

“I’m 100 percent sure mananalo siya (Reymart). I believe in his power,” said Jim Claude Manangquil, CEO of Sanman Promotions. “Not only power, he’s got good skills din so I believe na mananalo talaga siya.”

“Conditioning was not a problem for Reymart since he has been training in the US despite the pandemic,” he added. “It is now about executing the game plan against Rodriguez.”

Rodriguez, who has a 19-1-0 record, is determined to bounce back from his defeat to IBF world bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue of Japan./PN
