MANILA – After months of being an officer-in-charge, Lieutenant General Archie Gamboa has been finally appointed as the permanent Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.
President Rodrigo Duterte announced Gamboa’s appointment on Friday evening, saying the latter showed his sincerity in implementing the changes in the PNP.
“We have the PNP chief, I’m going to appoint you as the regular PNP but you and Secretary [Eduardo] Año and I will have a long, long talk first,” he addressed Gamboa in a speech in Davao City.
“Ipinakita mo sa akin ‘yung sincerity mo and I want you to leave something that you will be remembered by the country,” the Chief Executive added.
The PNP welcomed the President Duterte’s pronouncement to appoint Gamboa as its new chief.
“Under the able leadership of Police Lieutenant General (Archie) Gamboa, we assure the public that the PNP remains committed to intensify the campaign against criminality, illegal drugs and corruption,” the PNP said in a statement.
Gamboa was one of the shortlisted to replace former PNP chief Oscar Albayalde, who resigned ahead of his retirement in November over allegations he intervened to lower the penalty for 13 of his subordinates involved in a controversial drug raid in 2013./PN
