ILOILO City – Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon has picked Cong. Jerry Treñas as his choice for mayor in next year’s election.

Ganzon announced yesterday he agreed to be Treñas’ running mate.

Treñas is now on his third term as congressman and is barred by law from seeking a fourth consecutive term.

Ganzon’s disclosure firmed up the widely-held belief that Treñas is indeed serious in his plan to run for mayor even if in December 2016 he announced he would be retiring from politics after his term ends in 2019.

It also further put on the spotlight the perceived rift between Treñas and Mayor Jose Espinosa III whom the congressman endorsed for mayor in December 2016.

According to Ganzon, Treñas asked him to be his running mate.

Before saying yes to Treñas, Ganzon said he first sought the counsel of President Rodrigo Duterte’s people in Davao.

He got a favorable response, said Ganzon.

Treñas is a member of the President’s ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan. Ganzon isn’t though he previously claimed to have been designated by the President himself to be the latter’s point man in Iloilo City.

Ganzon was elected No. 1 councilor in 2016 but became the vice mayor in October last year after then vice mayor Espinosa assumed as city mayor following Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog’s dismissal from service for unexplained wealth./PN
