ILOILO City – While concerns about the Ungka flyover’s stability persist, Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon has chosen to give the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 the benefit of the doubt, based on their recent report.
The three-page daily monitoring report, which was submitted to the vice mayor on Tuesday, Oct. 3, covered a week’s observation of the flyover. It indicated no movement in the flyover since its partial reopening on Sept. 22 up to Sept. 30.
Commenting on the report during an interview, Ganzon said, “While I’m not an engineer who can give you a hundred percent assurance, let’s give DPWH the benefit of the doubt. From the report, they assure us that there hasn’t been any displacement, essentially conveying to the public that the flyover is safe.”
Although the vice mayor emphasized that the ultimate decision to use the flyover rests with the public, he expressed appreciation for DPWH-6’s transparent communication.
“Their effort to provide some assurance to the people is commendable. Collaboration is crucial for Iloilo, and it would be regrettable if we don’t support their endeavors,” Ganzon said.
The report’s evaluation will be forwarded to city government engineers, from whom Ganzon will be seeking expert opinions.
Meanwhile, Engr. Sonny Boy Oropel, officer-in-charge of DPWH Region 6, has committed to providing daily monitoring updates to the Sangguniang Panlungsod./PN
