ILOILO City – Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon who tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was now negative of SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes the illness.
Ganzon himself announced the good news yesterday, roughly more than two weeks he was infected with the viral illness.
Ganzon’s second reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test showed a negative COVID-19 result.
He could now be released from the hospital depending on the doctor’s advice.
The vice mayor – asymptomatic – was the first city official who got infected. He went on hospital quarantine.
To recall, it was Mayor Jerry Treñas who announced Ganzon’s state of health in the afternoon of Aug. 30.
After Treñas’ announcement, Ganzon issued an official statement.
“Padayon lang kita sa pagtuo sa Mahal nga Diyos,” according to the vice mayor, a religious pastor.
Ganzon said he had himself hospitalized on Aug. 27 after vomiting. His initial laboratory tests showed an “onset of pneumonia” and gallstones.
As part of the hospital protocols, Ganzon underwent a test for COVID-19. The result was released on Aug.30.
COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China in December 2019.
It was still unclear how Ganzon contracted the coronavirus. But he said, “Mahimo resulta man ini sang akon padayon nga paglibot sa syudad agud makabulig man atipan sa sitwasyon sang aton palangga nga mga pumuluyo. Ini bangud indi ko man mapalagyuhan ang akon responsibilidad sa aton pumuluyo.”
Ganzon, son of the late Sen. Rodolfo “Roding” Ganzon who served the Upper House from 1963 to 1969, assured the people of Iloilo City he was feeling better now.
“Subong, maayo na ang akon pamatyag. Wala ako ubo, hilanat kag wala naman nagasuka,” he said.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness and dry cough.
Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell./PN
