MANILA – Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian is pushing to strengthen the country’s nuclear research capacity.
Gatchalian, chairperson of the Committee on Energy, said he plans to allocate “more funds” to the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute aimed at boosting the use of nuclear energy.
“May facility tayo sa (University of the Philippines). That can be maximized for nuclear research. So, sayang. Alam kong maraming magagaling doon who stayed in the country and we could empower them to do more in-depth research, magagamit natin ‘yung output,” he said.
The lawmaker said he will also file a resolution seeking to study the possibility of the nuclear energy platform.
“Nothing to lose but everything to gain. The policy and the research should guide the country. It should not be emotions, it should not be perceptions, but scientific, educated research should be the basis of our policy,” Gatchalian said.
Gatchalian previously expressed concern about the planned reopening of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, citing the nuclear accidents in Chernobyl, Ukraine and Fukushima in Japan where “billions of dollars” were spent to evacuate people from the areas and set-up temporary facilities.
“Tayo ba meron ba tayong pondo at kapabilidad para mag-evacuate ng ganoon karaming tao? Ang Bataan is about 600,000 in population and a highly-industrialized province very near Metro Manila. So if ever something happens, meron ba tayong location para mag-evacuate? Meron ba tayong capability to evacuate? Gaano ba kabilis yung response natin?”/PN
