ILOILO City – The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) will investigate the frequent power outages in the island province of Guimaras.
Commissioner Ina Magpale-Asirit said the Guimaras Electric Cooperative (Guimelco) will be asked to explain.
Guimarasnons have been complaining about the almost daily brownouts.
Guimelco officer-in-charge Mayrou Espiña had blamed the inclement weather, trees and even reptiles for the frequent power interruptions.
“Apparently, steel electricity posts are like magnets for reptiles,” said Asirit.
This problem with reptiles, particularly geckos, is not unique to Guimelco, Asirit stressed, citing similar experiences of other electric cooperatives.
The power interruptions puzzled Guimarasnons. They believed the presence of a wind farm in the island already stabilized Guimaras’ power supply.
Vice Gov. John Edward Gando welcomed ERC’s plan to investigate Guimelco. For the past two months, the brownouts occurred mostly at night when people needed electricity the most.
“Nagapanyapon ka, mapatay gid siya. Te gasala-sala ka eh,” said Gando.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Guimaras recently urged Guimelco to submit a report every time there’s a brownout./PN
