ON Mom’s special day, there’s no better way to show your love and appreciation than with a special gift from the heart.
Flowers are nice and breakfast in bed is practically a given, but any mom loves a gift that comes from the heart. We’ve rounded up our best Mother’s Day gift ideas for you to mull over.
Photo Throw Pillow
Does she have a favorite family photo? More than one? Use it as inspiration to make a pillow that she can snuggle with at home.
You can approach any souvenir shop or personalizing service to get these one-of-a-kind gifts made for you. Or you can print your photos on paper-backed linen, which can feed into your home printer, and you can sew it unto a throw pillow yourself.
Teacup Lights
Here’s a new way for her to enjoy “tea time.” Antique teacups – in their pretty, feminine prints and color palettes – can be upcycled into beautiful candles.
In a small pan set over a larger pan of simmering water, melt down old candles; clip the thermometer to the upper pot, and keep temperature at about 185 degrees. Remove old wicks with tongs.
Cut a piece of wicking to the cup’s height plus 2 inches. Clamp one end to a wick sustainer; tie the other end around a skewer. Dip wicking and sustainer into melted wax to coat them. Remove and stick sustainer to cup’s bottom.
Pour in the wax, stopping 1/2 inch below the cup’s rim. Allow wax to set, about 1 hour. The candle will harden with a well in the center. To even it out, use another skewer to prick a circle of holes about 1/16 inch deep around the wick. Pour in melted wax until surface is 1/4 inch below rim. Cut wick.
Box Full of Memories
Remind her of a fun family vacation by making a photo box out of two wooden picture frames. When you’re done, fill the box with ticket stubs and souvenirs from the trip.
Remove contents of two identical wooden picture frames. Paint the frames; when dry, align them back to back; attach small hinges. Using the cardboard backing as a template, cut two pieces of cork.
For box lid, reinstall the glass, then your photo, and the cardboard; adjust pins. Attach cork to cardboard with double-sided carpet tape; for the bottom of the box, glue second piece of cork inside frame./PN
