MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas Cadets squad was hardly challenged. It scored a 129-34 victory over Myanmar in the 29th Southeast Asian Games men’s basketball at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Raymar Jose led the way with 22 points while Kobe Paras added 20 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and four assists for Gilas Cadets on Tuesday night.
With the win, Gilas improved to a 2-0 win-loss slate.
The national men’s basketball team jumped to an early 31-7 lead on hits by Jose, Chris Michael Tolomia and Christian Standhardinger. The lead grew further to 66-10 at the half with hits from Paras and Jeth Troy Rosario.
The Gilas Cadets pulled away further in the second half with reserves Kevin Ferrer, Von Pessumal, Carl Bryan Cruz, and Rosario contributing on offense to build its largest lead at 95 points.
“We need to respect ‘yung kalaban natin and respect the game,” said Gilas Cadets head coach Joseph Uichico. “Kung tutuusin, kaya nilang gawin ‘yung gusto nila pero you also have to play hard so it carries over into the next game (against Malaysia).”
Meanwhile, Perlas Pilipinas national women’s basketball team quickly recovered from its heartbreaking defeat to Indonesia on Monday with a lopsided 123-33 win over Myanmar.
Claire Castro had double-double 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Cindy Resultay and Raisa Palmera-Dy contributed 16 points apiece for Perlas, which has improved to 2-1 win-loss mark./PN
