MANILA – The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings and Meralco Bolts will be shooting for a 3-2 lead in Game 5 of the 2016 Oppo PBA Governor’s Cup best-of-seven finals tonight at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Game time is at 6:30 pm., with the Kings aiming to move closer to its first PBA crown since 2008, while the Bolts will be gunning for its franchise’s first championship.
The Kings were able to level the series at 2-2 following a come-from-behind 88-86 win over the Bolts in Game 4 on Friday night via a game-winning turn-around shot by Joe Devance.
The Kings trailed by as much as 16 points but got a huge lift from veterans Anthony Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa and Devance in the final quarter to turn things around for the victory.
“It was a storybook game,” said Kings head coach Tim Cone. “We were swinging in the wind, we didn’t know what we were doing, then Jayjay and Mark played with so much energy and pretty much saved our series.”
“Meralco had a good job defending us and we have to find something that will work for us. We’re the best defensive team, we’re kinda getting away from that and we need to get back to it,” he added.
Bolts head coach Norman Black admitted to be a bit frustrated after losing a 16 point lead in a huge fourth period scoring run by the Kings but said he’ll instead focus on adjustments for the pivotal Game 5.
“I’m just looking in the long run,” said Black, who intentionally did not use Jared Dillinger and Jimmy Alapag in Game 4 as he prepares them for the crucial stretch of the title series.
Meanwhile, the PBA, in a media advisory sent to Panay News, said that there is a possibility that the Game 5 of the series will be moved to a later date in case of heavy rain brought about by Typhoon Karen.
“Sunday’s game can and will be cancelled in the event typhoon Karen intensifies,” said PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial. “Please monitor our website and social media sites for news and updates.”/PN
