MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings avoided a precarious situation in the quarterfinals round with a 100-92 triple overtime win over Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the 2017-2018 PBA Philippine Cup last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Facing the possibility of being relegated to as low as eighth place, the Kings had a strong start and went up by as much as 13 points in the third period on hits by LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar.

The Painters, however, responded with a huge run in the fourth quarter behind Raymond Almazan and Beau Belga to force an overtime. The Painters had a chance to win it in the first and second overtime but misfired their last minute shots.

The Kings regained its form in the third extension with hits from Solomon Mercado and Jervy Cruz for a 96-92 lead. Tenorio then iced the win for the Kings with two free throws.

Aguilar led the way with double-double 30 points and 17 rebounds, while Tenorio chipped in 20 markers.

The Kings ended the elimination at fourth place and will face the Painters in a best-of-three quarterfinals series beginning on Monday.

In the first game, Phoenix Fuel Masters squandered a lead as high as 31 points before escaping with a 104-100 win over GlobalPort Batang Pier. Matthew Wright led the way with 32 points for the Fuel Masters.

The Fuel Masters had a blazing start behind the hot three-point shooting of Wright and Jeffrei Chan to pull to its largest lead at 31 points in the third period. The Batang Pier countered with a run in the fourth to come to within 90-99.

Batang Pier pulled even closer at 100-104 and had a chance to trim the deficit further but Taha, Terrence Romeo and Juan Nicholas Elorde misfired their attempts allowing the Fuel Masters to escape with the win.

With the win, the Fuel Masters was able to forge a do-or-die game with the TNT KaTropa for the eighth and final quarterfinals seat. The Batang Pier, meanwhile, has been relegated to seventh place and will have a twice-to-win disadvantage over no. 2 Magnolia Hotshots./PN
