MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings squandered a 26-point lead before hanging on to a 124-118 overtime win over San Miguel Beermen in Game 2 of the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup finals last night at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.

Japeth Aguilar led the way with double-double 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Kings, which bounced back from a Game 1 defeat to tie the best-of-seven championship series at 1-1.

Kevin Ferrer chipped in with 21 markers, while Earl Scottie Thompson had near triple-double 18 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists for the Kings, which is gunning for its second straight PBA title.

From a tightly contested opening quarter where the Kings is up 24-17, it went on a huge surge in the second frame behind consecutive triples by Ferrer to open up its largest lead at 65-39 on six straight points by LA Tenorio.

The Beermen countered with its own run early in the third frame as three-pointers by Arwind Santos and Marcio Lassiter allowed them to come to within 84-82, but the Kings pulled away anew at 89-82 on back-to-back hits by Chris Ellis.

After another Beermen run to tie the count at 93-all, both teams had a tight exchange until the Beermen surged to a 110-108 lead on a triple by Gabby Espinas, but a buzzer-beater put-back by Joe Devance forced an overtime.

In the extension period, the Kings surged to a 118-112 lead on consecutive hits by Mercado, Devance and Thompson, but back-to-back treys by Ilonggo Ronald Tubid for Beermen tied the count at 118-all.

The Kings answered back with a 6-0 run via two free throws by Aguilar, a layup by Thompson and a perimeter jumper by Mercado to clinch the championship series-tying win.

Santos top-scored with 23 points, while Lassiter had 21 markers before getting thrown out late in the third quarter after being whistled for technical foul for the Beermen, which took a 109-88 Game 1 win./PN
