MANILA – Add Greg Slaughter to the growing list of injured players of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings while they aim for a third straight championship in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup.
Due to an ankle injury the 7-foot center will be out at least until early October, Kings head coach Tim Cone told ESPN 5’s “Sports Center Philippines.”
“Greg will not be playing for us at least until October as his ankle injury is taking time to heal,” Cone said of the reigning Governors’ Cup Best Player of the Conference awardee.
Slaughter suffered the injury during Kings’ 104-98 victory over NorthPort Batang Pier on Sept. 5 when he had an awkward landing while battling for position against Batang Pier’s Sean Anthony.
The injury also proved to be a dampener for Slaughter’s return to the national basketball team – he was unable to play against Iran and Qatar in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifier.
“Hopefully, Greg will be ready to play for the national team in the second window in late November,” Cone said.
Slaughter is the sixth Kings player in sickbay. Others are Joe Devance, Solomon Mercado, Jervy Cruz, Arthur dela Cruz, and Julian Sargent.
Among the six, Slaughter, Mercado, Devance, and dela Cruz are the only ones who might return midway in the season-ending conference. Cruz and Sargent might wait until the next season after undergoing separate surgeries./PN
