ILOILO City – A 14-year-old girl was rescued from drowning while swimming near Lapuz port in Lapuz district here at around 11:40 a.m. yesterday, October 23.

Alias “May Ann,” a resident of Barangay Don Esteban, Lapuz, was swimming with a group of other children when they were seen clinging to ropes of docked ships at the port, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Iloilo City Station.

A crew member of a nearby shipping line was the first to dive in after receiving reports that May Ann had gone under the water. By the time she was brought to the surface, she was already pale and unresponsive.

PCG officer Christopher Palma immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation to revive the girl. After expelling water from her lungs, the girl regained consciousness and was immediately taken to West Visayas State University Medical Center for further care.

Following the incident, PCG personnel have tightened security and issued strict warnings to prevent residents, especially children, from swimming in the area, particularly with the ongoing inclement weather./PN
