VIGAN, Ilocos Sur – Western Visayas completed its elimination round romp in the 61st Palarong Pambansa secondary girls volleyball after a 25-14, 25-11 win over Cagayan de Oro on Wednesday at the Sto. Domingo Gym.
Alyssa Bertolano and Kiesha Bedonia continued their stellar plays for the Blue Barons as they pounced on CDO errors in the first and second sets to finish their Group C assignment with a 4-0 win-loss card.
“I am glad that the players responded well (against CDO),” said WV assistant coach Biboy Calamba. “Medyo hindi maganda pinakita namin in our first three games. Mabuti na lang at umangat ang mga laro ng bata kasi medyo matibay rin ang Cagayan.”
For finishing the group matches undefeated, WV earned the top seed and will face Davao in a knockout quarterfinals round at 11 a.m. today.
In elementary girls volleyball, WV scored 25-9, 25-22 over Zamboanga to finish the eliminations with a 3-1 card. It will face Central Visayas in the quarterfinals this morning.
Meanwhile WV’s secondary boys basketball team cruised to its second straight victory with a 93-66 domination over host team Region 1 at the San Juan Gym.
Negrense Mark Nonoy led the way with 35 points, including seven 3-point conversions, while Reynold Tupas added 21 markers for WV, which will battle Mimaropa in the quarterfinals today.
WV’s secondary sepak takraw teams continued to strengthen their medal chances, with the girls squad having a 3-0 win-loss card while the boys posting a 2-1 slate.
Also having a strong run was the WV futsal team, which remained undefeated with three wins. The Iloilo-led team outplayed Soccsksargen (7-1), Central Luzon (9-1) and CAR (4-1)./PN
