‘Give exact change this holiday season’

SAN JOSE, Antique – Business establishments in the province were reminded to strictly follow Republic Act 10909, or the No Shortchanging Act of 2016, this holiday season.

The Department of Trade and Industry said the law should be observed especially this “season of gift-giving and celebrations.”

RA 10909 prohibits business establishments from giving insufficient change to purchasing customers.

The law aims to “protect consumers against deceptive, unfair and unconscionable sales acts and practices” by institutionalizing “the industry practice of giving exact change.”

Senior trade and industry development specialist Engineer Lynna Joy Cardinal said consumers must demand for the exact amount of change after purchasing goods or availing themselves of services.

To further strengthen the campaign, DTI has posted reminders in stores.

Moreover, the Trade department reminded that placing price tags on goods and issuing receipts in every transaction are a must.

Should any business establishment fail to do these, one can report them at the consumer welfare desk of the DTI./PN
