ILOILO City — Typhoon “Glenda” did not directly hit Western Visayas but intensified southwest monsoon and brought heavy rainfall across the region yesterday.
The downpour resulted to flooding and landslides and caused minor damage to infrastructures in various provinces.
While it is not along the typhoon’s track, Western Visayas experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, said Rosario Cabrera, director of Office of Civil Defense Region 6.
A bridge in Barangay Larioja, Patnongon, Antique collapsed as a result of the prolonged heavy rains, said a report from Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC).
RDDRMC has already referred the incident to the Department of Public Works and Highways.
In Sibalom, Antique, flooding was reported in Sitio Tipuluan in District 4. Three houses were totally damaged. Seven families (27 individuals) were evacuated.
The municipal government of Sibalom immediately distributed relief goods.
Meanwhile, in Laua-an, Antique, about 15 hectares of sugarcane and rice farms were inundated.
In Barangay San Tiagao, Laua-an, there was landslide caused by the softening of soil. Nearby residents had been alerted and evacuated.
In Iloilo, landslides were reported in Barangay Camandag, Leon and in some parts of Alimodian.
In Janiuay, a man who had drowned in Suage River was found yesterday afternoon.
In Roxas City, a house was totally damaged and another one was partially damaged.
Guimaras suffered power outage due to a damaged submarine cable — hit by a ship’s anchor — between the island province and Iloilo.
A pump boat capsized off Barangay San Juan, Pontevedra due to huge waves. Two fishermen onboard were rescued./PN
