ILOILO CITY – The Iloilo City Hall is now powered by solar panels.

A total of 134 solar panels were recently installed that can generate 60 kilowatts a day and supply at least one-third of the city hall’s daily demand of approximately 200 kilowatts.

According to Mayor Jerry Treñas, the use of solar power could help lessen the city government’s expenses on electricity.

“Embracing sustainability and harnessing the power of the sun, Iloilo City Hall has taken a major step towards a greener future. With this eco-friendly initiative, the city hall aims to reduce its carbon footprint and promote a more sustainable environment,” Treñas said.

The city government also plans to apply with the MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power) for the net metering program for the excess supply, particularly on Saturdays and Sundays.

With the use of solar power, the city government could save around P96,000 per month, aside from the result of the net metering.

For his part, Engr. James Macairang of the City Engineer’s Office said the solar power will be a big help in terms of consumption.

He added: “At the same time, we will be doing green projects in the city.”

Treñas also said that more public schools in the city will soon be powered by solar panels.

Currently, the city government’s two dialysis centers as well as the Esplanade are using solar energy. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency)/PN
