Gorriceta steps aside for wife in 2nd District congressional race

ILOILO – Second District’s Cong. Michael Gorriceta has decided not to run for any position in the upcoming May 12, 2025 elections. Instead, he is stepping aside to give way for his wife, Dr. Kathryn Joyce Fermin-Gorriceta, who is running for the congressional seat in the district.

As the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) closed on October 8, no other candidate filed to oppose Dr. Gorriceta, ensuring her unchallenged victory in the May 2025 elections.

But what led Cong. Gorriceta to decide not to run and allow his wife to take over the helm of the 2nd District?

According to Gorriceta, he wanted to maintain only one family member in politics. He also confirmed that he had considered an offer to be Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.’s running mate, which prompted him to introduce his wife in the district, aiming to entrust its leadership to someone reliable who could continue the programs and projects he initiated.

However, his potential candidacy as Defensor’s running mate did not materialize. Defensor eventually selected Mayor Nathalie Debuque of Anilao as his running mate.

During Dr. Gorriceta’s ongoing rounds in the 2nd District, the people have warmly welcomed her.

“I saw that Dr. Kathy is well-prepared, and given the enthusiastic reception towards her, I didn’t want to delay the momentum because the excitement might fade. People are eager to see what she can accomplish,” explained Cong. Gorriceta.

He expressed confidence in his wife’s ability to continue his projects and programs, highlighting her background as a doctor.

Before entering politics, Dr. Gorriceta had already made significant contributions, such as creating the Association of LGBTQIA+ in the second district.

As for his plans after the May 2025 elections, Cong. Gorriceta revealed that he is exploring options, including a possible national government post to continue serving the 2nd District.

“I have close ties with Speaker Martin Romualdez, and I’m considering a national position that would allow me to keep working for the 2nd District. This way, both of us can contribute to its development,” said Cong. Gorriceta./PN
