Gov’t doing all it can to address hunger – Palace

MANILA – The government is doing everything to address the hunger experienced by Filipinos amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, according to the Malacañang on Friday.

Ginagawa natin ang lahat para masolusyunan ang kagutuman sa panahon ng pandemya, pero alam natin na mas marami pang dapat gawin,” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said.

Roque made the statement as a response to the survey made by the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute that six in 10 Filipino families had little to no food during the pandemic.

The survey noted that 62 percent of Filipino families experienced moderate to severe food insecurity; 71.8 percent are forced to money just to buy food; and 66.3 percent asked for food from their relatives, neighbors, and friends.

Roque said the government is doing its best to provide food to the people since hunger is expected after lockdowns were imposed.

It also extended cash aid, distribution of food packs, and financial aid to employees and small businesses affected by COVID-19.

Naiintindihan po natin na kapag hindi nakakapagtrabaho ang ating mga kababayan ay ang resulta po talaga ay kagutuman,” the spokesperson added.

Around 500,000 workers remain displaced due to the imposed modified enhanced community quarantine in the National Capital Region Plus.

The DOST-FNRI survey came out when the community pantries sprouted in the country with many people lining up for hours to get free foods and other necessities./PN
