MANILA – The government may name the telecommunications company that will challenge Globe Telecom and PLDT Inc by October, if terms of reference for the selection are approved this week, the Cabinet official overseeing the search said Monday.

Stakeholders and consumers “overwhelmingly” agreed that the highest commitment for service should be the main criteria for the third telecommunications player, said Department of Information and Communications Technology officer-in-charge Eliseo Rio.

If the selection is based mainly on the highest bid, Rio said, “We are forcing bidder to put up money upfront which has nothing to do with the rollout of infrastructure and it has nothing to do with improving the services.” (ABS-CBN News)
