BORACAY ISLAND – Environment secretary Roy Cimatu on Friday said they are mulling reopening to the public the island’s Bulabog Beach, which draws kiteboarding and windsurfing enthusiasts.
Coliform level in the waters off the eastern side of the island has dropped, he said.
Boracay was closed to tourists for six months after President Rodrigo Duterte described its waters as “cesspools” because of sewage problems.
Cimatu also reiterated that wedding ceremonies on the beach are not allowed.
Photo shoots on the beach are allowed but visitors must not wear shoes, he added.
During the interview, Cimatu disclosed they are planning of hiring a general manager who will oversee the tourism operations in the island.
The inter-agency task force was only created for the massive cleanup, he said.
Cimatu said they are also looking into implementing a communal sewage treatment plant (STP) from a Chinese private firm.
The STP costs at least P4 million, operates daily, and can accommodate some 20 households. (ABS-CBN News)
