Grace Poe vs arming state lawyers

MANILA – Sen. Grace Poe is against giving government lawyers weapons.

“While I condemn the killings of our prosecutors, I have reservations in the suggested solution of arming them,” Poe said in a statement.

On June 5 Assistant State Prosecutor Madonna Joy Tanyag, who was five months pregnant, was stabbed to death in Quezon City.

Last month Quezon City Deputy Prosecutor Rogelio Velasco was also shot dead by several men.

In light of these crimes, Poe called on the government to enhance the capability of law enforcement agencies “in terms of detection, investigation and prosecution.”

“We cannot possibly propose to arm every sector that has become the target of criminals as our way forward,” she said.

On May 17 Poe filed Senate Resolution No. 737 seeking to investigate the killings of state prosecutors.

“Obviously, due to the nature of their sworn duty and mandate, our public prosecutors are clearly constantly within the crosshairs of the most notorious, dangerous and evil-minded personalities in the country whom they ought to prosecute,” she said./PN
