MANILA – The De La Salle University Green Archers will be gunning for the UAAP Season 79 men’s seniors’ basketball crown when they face the Ateneo Blue Eagles in Game 2 of best-of-three finals today at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Game time is at 3:30 p.m. with the Green Archers aiming to bag its ninth UAAP championship, its first since 2013, while the Blue Eagles will try to force a sudden death Game 3 on Saturday.
The Green Archers drew first blood in the series following its 67-65 victory over the Blue Eagles in Game 1 on Saturday with a game-winning layup by Jeron Teng.
However, Green Archers head coach Aldin Ayo is guarding against complacency as the Blue Eagles is capable of retaliating, as shown by their semifinals series against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws.
“It’s a big responsibility to finish the series on Game 2,” said Ayo. “Malaking pressure. Hindi nga lang nationwide eh, world-wide. Kasi iyung mga alumni na nasa ibang bansa, message nang message sa akin.”
“Ayaw ko mag-predict (if it will be a 2-0 sweep). We’re just going to do our best in Game Two,” added Ayo, who steered the Letran Knights to the NCAA men’s basketball crown last year.
Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin, for his part, said that he is still confident that his troops will bounce back in Game 2 as they hope to avoid a repeat of their poor start in the series.
“We got off to a terrible start in Game 1 and La Salle got off to a great start with a lot of composure and they did things they wanted and we didn’t,” said the former Gilas Pilipinas coach.
“We were very rattled in the beginning I think by La Salle and maybe by the occasion, too. Then we settled down and played good basketball for three quarters, came back, made a fight out of it,” he added. “We will bounce back.”
This marks the fifth time that the Green Archers and the Blue Eagles are meeting in the best-of-three finale. The last time was in 2008 when the Blue Eagles swept the Green Archers, 2-0./PN
