“We want to show the world that we don’t need dirty energy to power development,” says Guimaras governor Samuel Gumarin.

SAN LORENZO, Guimaras – Greenpeace International has declared this island province 100 percent coal-free.

Gov. Samuel Gumarin and Sangguniang Bayan member Jimmy Gajo received Seals of Climate Leadership from the environment advocate group yesterday in Barangay Suclaran.

“We want to show the world that we don’t need dirty energy to power development. The people of Guimaras have embraced renewables over dirty, polluting energy,” said Gumarin. “We want to show that a sustainable development path, powered by renewable energy is not only possible, but more viable.”

The province was recognized for its efforts to help solve the climate problem by embracing renewable energy sources.

The province was commended along with the Phinma Energy Corp. for establishing the 54-MW Wind Farm.

Gumarin, in his speech, cited the initiatives of the local government units (LGUs) in the province to combat climate change.

LGUs are implementing programs under the Sustainable Development Goals of the province.

One of these is the integrated coastal management program, which was adopted as the key developmental strategy under the Priority Development Agenda 2017-2022.

Its implementation is part of the province’s way to achieve its vision of being an agro-ecotourism capital in Western Visayas.

“Our best practices exhibit partnership and collaboration of all the tiers of the governing bodies down to the grassroots with supporting policies and local laws, such as the anti-plastic ordinance, thrust on organic farming, greening program, promotion of indigenous materials for sustainable livelihood and renewable energy, among the many others,” Gumarin further said./PN
