Greetings to all

BY DENNIS FITZGERALD

“MERRY Christmas to all”, or as I now told to say, “Happy holidays” or “Seasons greetings”.

Several well-meaning, basically sane people have told me that it could be offensive but when I have spoken to people from various non-Christian faiths they are quite happy with the greeting and see it as positive.

The “woke” world emphasizes blandness and not causing any offence but they take the pleasures out of life.

It would be best to accept the differences that exist and support them rather than trying to silence the well-meaning.

Anyway, I think I know a few people who will be getting coal from Santa in their Christmas stockings, although Santa may have been told that coal is environmentally damaging.

A poisoned chalice?

US President-elect Donald Trump seemed very pleased to be named the Times “Person of the Year” for a second time, an honor he shares with a number of people including Richard Nixon and Joseph Stalin.

What might not be obvious is that it isn’t the best, or bravest or most generous but rather more for the most prominent or most influential, and not all of them were good people.

There are people that most consider evil, with the obvious examples being Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Putin and those that have seen better times, especially Rudy Giuliani.

Trump should work to make the world a better place and be remembered for his good works and leadership. At present he is too well-known for his misdemeanurs and his all caps tweets.

Time will judge him more accurately – and maybe harshly – which will decide how he is really remembered.

Meta missing?

Apparently, Meta has had a bit of a crash and Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp went off-line.

I say “apparently” as I don’t have or want a special media presence so I can’t personally confirm the horror of no Facebook and thus no likes.

Go outside for a while, it might be a lovely day.

The 21st century Cain and Abel

Cain and Abel had nothing on the Murdoch family, it would seem. The story of God favoring Abel leading to Cain killing Abel has been updated to the Rupert favoring Lachlan, leading to his siblings killing that deal.

There is a strong likelihood that Rupert will try again, appealing to a higher court. But given his age it might not be too long before he faces his final judge. And trying to disown three of your children, even if it is only business, won’t be seen as a positive.

Rather than hiring legal counsel, it might be best to go to a family counselor./PN
