Group opposes Ceneco’s holding of assembly in Sept.

BACOLOD City – The newly-organized Power Advocates Consumers’ Council (PACC) in this city is opposing to the holding of the 43rd Annual General Membership Assembly (AGMA) of Central Negros Electric Cooperative (Ceneco) on Sept. 26.

PACC is composed of Power Watch Negros represented by its secretary-general Wennie Sancho; Alliance of Concerned Transport In Occidental Negros (ACTON) led by its chairperson Teddy Macainan; and Consumers Alliance for Reform (CAR) headed by its president Rodolfo Song.

According to the PACC, holding the assembly “poses danger to the health and lives of consumers as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is still ongoing”.

“The holding of the AGMA is unnecessary, impractical, and not indispensable to the continuous operation of Ceneco as a distribution utility providing electricity to consumers,” PACC said.

The group added that there is an urgent need to amend the constitution and by-laws of Ceneco before the holding of the AGMA “to safeguard the rights and welfare of the consumers”.

For his part, Ceneco acting general manager Danny Pondevilla said the management is willing to listen to the group.

He explained the Ceneco’s AGMA is long overdue because it was supposed to be held last June but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pondevilla said AGMA is held to update member-consumer-owners (MCOs) of the situation of an electric cooperative and inform them of the cooperative’s accomplishments, among others.

Pondevilla added that they would invite the group for a discussion.

He said the AGMA might be postponed again if the groups opposing its holding on Sept. 26 have compelling reasons./PN
