BACOLOD City – A progressive organization of teachers will mark the World Teachers’ Day today with a protest and other activities that they said reflect the plight of Philippine educators.
Member-public school teachers and -nonteaching staff in this city and nearby school divisions are on a mass leave today to join activities at the Rizal Park and the Fountain of Justice, said Gualberto Dajao, chairman of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers – Negros.
According to Dajao, public school teachers are “overworked, stressed, mired in poverty, and underpaid.”
Participants will gather at the Rizal Park at 12 noon for a rally and then have a “boodle fight” to “symbolize the current economic woes and hardships by workers in the public education system,” said Dajao.
At around 2 p.m. they will march to the city public plaza and toward the Fountain of Justice for a short program and noise barrage, he added.
The ACT-Negros leader said they aim to gather around 2,500 teachers and nonteaching staff in their World Teachers’ Day activities./PN
