MANILA – Militant youth group Anakbayan denounced the appointment of former Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Roy Cimatu to replace Gina Lopez as secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
President Rodrigo Duterte signed Cimatu’s appointment papers on Monday before the start of the 15th Cabinet Meeting.
His appointment as DENR chief will make big mining firms “happy,” said Anakbayan national chairperson Vencer Crisostomo.
“From killing lumads defending their land to militarizing rural communities: the AFP is the number one protector of mining and transnational corporations,” Crisistomo added.
According to him, the “creeping militarization” of the Duterte Cabinet will prevent the country from developing an independent foreign policy.
“We should be very wary of the appointment of military officials coming from one of the most corrupt and human rights violating institutions. This is not the change the Filipino people want,” Akbayan said.
In 2011, Cimatu was accused of receiving P80 million as part of the controversial pabaon system in the military.
Meanwhile, the youth group urged Duterte to push for the confirmation of Judy Taguiwalo as Department of Social Welfare and Development secretary and Rafael Mariano as Department of Agrarian Reform secretary.
“We call for the immediate implementation of a program of genuine agrarian reform national industrialization,” they ended./PN
